Flat and round characters, characters as described by the course of their development in a work of literature. Flat characters are two-dimensional in that they are relatively uncomplicated and do not change throughout the course of a work. By contrast, round characters are complex and undergo development, sometimes sufficiently to surprise the reader.
Long John Silver is a great example of a round character in the book. He is the ringleader of a secret pirate band. He is deceitful and disloyal, greedy and visceral, and doesn't care about human relations. But yet is kind toward Jim and genuinely fond of him. All of these traits show him as a round character.
Another round Character is Jim. He is the first person narrator of pretty much the whole book. He is eager and enthusiastic. He's a modest boy and never really boasts about all the pretty remarkable stuff he does in the book. We learn a lot about him and go through a lot with him during the book. This shows him to be a round character especially when compared to other more minor characters. |
