This is a very good example of characterization early on in the novel. This contains a few types of characterization in it. It is mostly of the description type, with Jim describing the captain. But Jim is describing the diaulaogue and actions of the captain. He also talks about the thoughts and actions of the characters listening to the captains stories. This paints the captain as a man who has seen a lot of horror in his life time, and is a great example of characterization that is present in the book.
