Complications are a circumstance that complicates something; a difficulty.
These are very, very common literature. They take a simple story such as a man creating a being and turn it into a complicated and riveting story by adding complexities and other story details that make the interesting to read. Not as many people would want to read a story where everything works out perfectly and nothing bad really happens. This would also make the story much shorter. An example of a complication in the book: When Jim first gets the treasure map, this adds a complication to the story, all of a sudden he is faced with the complication of dealing with the map and what to do with it. |
An example of a pocket watch that is a simple time keeping device, but becomes complex because of all the complications of it's gears. The watch can be viewed as a metaphor to Treasure Island, which is made interesting and complex because of it's complications.
