Recognition is the point at which a character understands his or her situation as it really is.
Some examples of recognition in the story was when Jim was in the forest. He heard talking, and decided to go investigate. He heard a gunshot and realized that it was actually the pirates betraying the Royal Navy, killing their crew. This is when Jim recognized just how dangerous pirates can be and that one needs to be very careful when dealing with pirates.
Another example is when Jim is hiding in a barrel. He is listening to Long John Silver. Jim used to look up to Silver and thought of him as a trusty friend. This is the point he recognizes that he was not exactly seeing Silver as who he really is. He learns that Silver wants to take all the treasure for himself and kill anyone in his way.
